The Absence of One chapter 37
A much more relaxed Bette Porter showed up at Tina’s doorstep late Sunday evening. She handed over their daughter without fanfare, and Tina took that as a good sign.
“Stay for dinner?”
She watched as Bette struggled to decide. The moment she did, however, it was Tina’s turn to struggle. She hid her disappointment behind a smile.
“I’m sorry, I can’t.”
“Hot date with a politician?” Tina asked bitterly.
The tall woman shook her head. This was typical occurrence for them. This time though, Bette was adamant on stopping it before the conversation turned ugly.
“Good night, Tina.”
Slighted by the rejection, she watched as Bette retreated to her car and drove off. Angelica’s continued chatter filled the rest of her night, but did little to distract her mother from thinking of Bette.
When she got into work next morning, Tina was inundated with the final touches of her latest project. Between now and the wrap party, she still have to secure a distributor for the new film.
The minute she could, Tina stepped away with her phone in hand. She bit her lip in concentration, trying to compose a text message to Bette. The screen was filled with her heartfelt words. After a quick read-through, she hit the delete button as fast as she could. The uncertainty gnawed at her. Her heart told her to make a clear pursuit of Bette, but her mind kept throwing red flags at her.
But she would get no chance to act on her feelings. The weeks flew by quickly, robbing her of precious time with Bette. Tina had called, but Bette had claimed end of semester finals as reason for her near nonexistence.
At least Barbara is back where she belongs, Tina thought bitterly. Tina knew the woman was back in DC, and probably would be there for some time. She was sure Bette kept some contact with the other woman, but she had hoped Barbara’s absence would help her cause.
Armed with that comforting thought, she picked up her phone and dialed her ex-wife’s number. She spoke briefly with James, the polite chatter keeping her nerves afloat.
“Tina?”

this was awesome, luv it but please dont put bette n tina back as yet, keep her w/ the senator, its a promising relationship..n i luv bette’s strength in this story
Oops, looks like Barbara wasn’t so far away after all. Glad that Bette stopped things before they got out of control. I hope Tina doesn’t do anything rash like run because it may break Bette’s heart. I am so glad that Tina fought for Bette and didn’t give up. I will be looking for the next chapter as I am sure the drama is about to commence.
Just keep Bette and Tina together, The can work out any problem.together.
Why should she talk to Barbara. Bette has to make the decision to go back to Tina it’s not Barbara’s decision. Bette needs to go back to Tina.
Ok Bette let talk to barbara and tell her that you don’t want to see her again and please go aways, cause you and Tina are back together now. Please post more, thanks!
Finally…. I love this story although Bette’s pairing with the senator drives me crazy. I see them more as a fling, not a relationship. Hope to see B&T work their way back.
I’ve always loved the potential pairing of Bette and the Senator. It was hot and the Senator was definitely a good match for Bette. She would challenge Bette. But I also love Bette w/Tina. What’s a girl to do??? PPS. You’ve been missed.
“Well, fuck.” Indeed, couldn’t agree more…I can only assume that the Senator has made her way back to WeHo? Perhaps if there were no Tina, I could back a new pairing for Bette…Bette really does need to remember to not dwell on mistakes like Melvin did…Thx for this and hope you give us another one soon!
i absolutely love Bette and Tina together but I don’t think they should get back together immediately.
Bette and Tina belong together. Yes, Bette has had a fling with Barbara, however, her heart is with Tina and always will be. Please let B and T work this out.
awww I was hoping that Bette would be strong enough to stay away from Tina. Her relationship with Barbara seemed to help her get some confidence back. Love the story tho, thanks for posting.
The senator is not good for Bette. Bette and Tina belong together and please keep it that way.
Couldn´t agree more – it´s so easy to fall back on what you know instead of risking something new – The senator is good for Bette
hrmmm. So… this talking to Barbara… who’s going to come out the rueful loser? Bette certainly hasn’t given Tina a definite yes or no. I’ll just be waiting on the next post, sky. Thanks
