The Absence of One chapter 37
“Hello Bette,” she began huskily. Subtlety was history. “Have dinner with me tonight.”
Her invitation was met with silence. The butterflies within started to flutter more rapidly. “Bette?”
“I’m sorry, I must have spaced out. What did you say?”
That is such a cop-out and you know it, Bette. “You heard me the first time, Bette.”
Bette smiled apologetically, and she was sure the caller could sense it, too. “I don’t know, Tina. Let me think about it and I’ll get back to you later?”
The resulting sigh was barely audible. She knew she should at least give Bette some time to think it over, but Tina was tired of waiting. “It’s just dinner, Bette. Not asking you to fix the health care system.”
“I might have a few ideas for that,” Bette teased uncertainly.
“Beeeeeette,” Tina tried to make herself sound as adult as possible.
“Scratch that. Abject poverty needs our attention.”
Tina scrunched her nose. “Why not global warming? You art folks are all about the environment, right?”
“One at a time, young grasshopper. Rome wasn’t built in a day,” Bette retorted.
Tina groaned. “You’re avoiding the question.”
Of course I’m avoiding the question, Bette thought. “No matter what I say, I can’t seem to impart to you not to try anymore.”
They really shouldn’t have this conversation over the phone. “Perhaps you should reconsider.”
“Why?” Bette’s voice took on a petulant child-like tone. “What else is there possibly for me to consider?”
“Let’s talk this over dinner,” Tina was getting impatient.
“Tina.”
“You know we will never be over,” Tina began. “You know it in your heart, too.”
Bette’s forehead crinkled. “What is in my heart does not equate to reality.”
“Goddamnit, Bette. Stop being a drama queen.” Tina hung up without waiting for Bette’s reply. She threw down her phone in frustration, refusing to replay their conversation in her mind. Her assistant was nowhere to be found, so Tina scribbled a note and left it on her desk before leaving.
Instead of heading home, the blonde navigated through the afternoon traffic and found herself in the parking lot of the CU art department. As she prepared to exit her car, she spied a tall figure heading toward a silver SUV.

this was awesome, luv it but please dont put bette n tina back as yet, keep her w/ the senator, its a promising relationship..n i luv bette’s strength in this story
Oops, looks like Barbara wasn’t so far away after all. Glad that Bette stopped things before they got out of control. I hope Tina doesn’t do anything rash like run because it may break Bette’s heart. I am so glad that Tina fought for Bette and didn’t give up. I will be looking for the next chapter as I am sure the drama is about to commence.
Just keep Bette and Tina together, The can work out any problem.together.
Why should she talk to Barbara. Bette has to make the decision to go back to Tina it’s not Barbara’s decision. Bette needs to go back to Tina.
Ok Bette let talk to barbara and tell her that you don’t want to see her again and please go aways, cause you and Tina are back together now. Please post more, thanks!
Finally…. I love this story although Bette’s pairing with the senator drives me crazy. I see them more as a fling, not a relationship. Hope to see B&T work their way back.
I’ve always loved the potential pairing of Bette and the Senator. It was hot and the Senator was definitely a good match for Bette. She would challenge Bette. But I also love Bette w/Tina. What’s a girl to do??? PPS. You’ve been missed.
“Well, fuck.” Indeed, couldn’t agree more…I can only assume that the Senator has made her way back to WeHo? Perhaps if there were no Tina, I could back a new pairing for Bette…Bette really does need to remember to not dwell on mistakes like Melvin did…Thx for this and hope you give us another one soon!
i absolutely love Bette and Tina together but I don’t think they should get back together immediately.
Bette and Tina belong together. Yes, Bette has had a fling with Barbara, however, her heart is with Tina and always will be. Please let B and T work this out.
awww I was hoping that Bette would be strong enough to stay away from Tina. Her relationship with Barbara seemed to help her get some confidence back. Love the story tho, thanks for posting.
The senator is not good for Bette. Bette and Tina belong together and please keep it that way.
Couldn´t agree more – it´s so easy to fall back on what you know instead of risking something new – The senator is good for Bette
hrmmm. So… this talking to Barbara… who’s going to come out the rueful loser? Bette certainly hasn’t given Tina a definite yes or no. I’ll just be waiting on the next post, sky. Thanks
